Savile was born in 1857. He was the son of Sir Francis Crossley and Martha Brinton.[1]
UK Census Date 1871: Living with his parents, cousin Sarah J Crossley and 10 servants in Halifax, Yorkshire (West Riding), England. Aged 13.
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. Upon the death of his father he succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Crossley [U.K., 1863] on 5 January 1872.
Savile was elected to parliament for Lowestoft in 1885, as a Liberal, a seat he held until 1892, and later sat for Halifax from 1900 to 1906. He was appointed High Sheriff of Suffolk for 1896-97.
He married Phyllis de Bathe (daughter of General Sir Henry Percival de Bathe) in 1887 in St. George Hanover Square, London, England.[2] Their children were:
He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1901. He was Colonel of the Prince of Wales Own Norfolk, Royal Garrison Artillery between 1906 and 1909. He gained the rank of Major between 1915 and 1916 in the 1st Suffolk Yeomanry.
Savile was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1902; was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order (K.C.V.O.) in 1909; was appointed Knight of Grace, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (K.G.St.J.) and was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1922.
Reputedly shot a polar bear in South Africa on the King's birthday.
He was created 1st Baron Somerleyton, of Somerleyton, co. Suffolk [U.K.] on 26 June 1916.
He passed away in 1935 at the age of 77.[3]
Savile was succeeded in the baronetcy and barony by his eldest son, Francis Savile Crossley.
