Biography

Hannah Cross was born in 1870 at Flamborough in Yorkshire, daughter of fisherman, Robert Cross, and his wife, Elizabeth Colley. [1]

In 1893 she married fisherman, Matthew Crimlis (or Crimlisk) of Filey, [2] son of Thomas Crimlisk and his wife, Elizabeth Jenkinson. When the 1901 Census was taken, Hannah was at home at 17 Queen Street in Filey with their three children, Grace, George and Wilfred, [3] but Matthew was at sea.

The great gale of the 5th of February 1909 cost the life of her brother, John, and his two eldest sons, Robert and Richard, when their coble was swamped in the entrance to North Landing. Some time thereafter Hannah took her two youngest children and returned to Flamborough to be with her mother [4] and, no doubt, to offer support to her sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth. Elizabeth Cross died in 1913. [5]

Events in far away Serbia in June 1914 led in August to Britain demanding that German troops be withdrawn from nearby Belgium. When the demand was ignored Britain found herself at war with Germany. [6] It was a new kind of warfare with the British Imperial fleet under threat from submarines and from minefields around the coast. The big trawlers were drafted into service as minesweepers while, inevitably, the price of fish rocketed. Earning a living as a fisherman was easier than ever provided you forgot about the minefields. [7] But then there was the sadness; Matthew's nephew, Harold Crimlisk, was killed in Belgium on the 20th of September 1917, just twenty years old. [8]

Matthew was skipper of his own boat, "Emulator" by 1919. The mine that took Emulator on the 15th of April (nearly six months after the war's end) also took their sons, 20 year old Wilfred, 17 year old Thomas, [9][10][11][12] and four more fishermen.

Hannah died on the 6th of July 1947 at 13 Hope Street in Filey. [13]
