Thank you for volunteering. You have successfully joined WikiTree.

Start with the pages https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To - they are really useful as you add profiles and learn your way around:

Let me know if you require assistance. I am happy to help. After adding my own family and ancestors I have found many cousins and distant ancestors here on WikiTree.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile as the links will work from there.

Thanks Deb, I've gotta admit I am finding the whole understanding how Wikitrees works quite challenging. I have a tree on ancestry is it possible to link all the work I have already done into wiki-trees. How do I go about searching wiki tree for where our part of the tree might be?

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Peter,

Depending on how many people are in your Ancestry tree, you might be able to upload a GEDCOM file to use with our GEDCOMpare process. That's one of the faster ways to find matches with existing profiles. One of our mentors created a tutorial for the WikiTree part of the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

You can also use the Search page to search the database using various settings. You can use the asterisk character as a wildcard at the end of names (Jo* will return Joseph, Joe, Jones, etc). You can also tell it if you do or don't want spelling variations (McGee only or McGee, McKee, and Mcghee for instance) using the radio buttons. I usually use minimal information in my first search, then start adjusting the parameters using the data boxes under the name to narrow my search.

Peter;

I was faced with the same challenge when I joined wikitree several years ago. Depending on how many folks you have on Ancestry the gedcom can be very difficult to use. If you can keep the gedcom to 20 or fewer profiles, usually in a family group, it will be easier to handle. I would start with a your nearest relatives and then work outward to your older relatives. The reward comes when you begin to get matches to existing wikitree profiles. You can look here (King-31026) for a profile that I created using a gedcom from Ancestry. There will be some editing involved but it still saves time. By the way my paternal grandmother is Nannie Belle Cox and can be found at Cox-23202. This one I moved over by hand to get the hang of WikeTree. John Kessler Kessler-1011
