This started out in a study of Kellands in Devon trying to work out how they related to each other but since it was mostly pre-1700 I could not work on it until I had earned the pre-1700 certificate! Now I'm not so certain about my potential Kelland ancestors and am currently working on the Worsdales in Staffordshire. In 1841 there were only 14 of them, so I thought it a good challenge to work out how they all relate in subsequent census years. I am only related to Worsdales by a marriage of a relative, but as it was a rare surname it looked like an interesting idea.

Biography

Recent family history is 'private', but I have ancestors in Staffordshire, London and surrounding counties, Warwickshire, Hampshire, Devon and further back in time they spread out... All English in all directions for generations. There was a rumour on my Dad's side that there might be some Irish in the family but I have not found any [yet!].

The first potential ancestor found not born in England was one 5th-great-grandparent born in North Wales, but that was put into question last week [Mar 2023] because of a mix up with middle names of an ancestor on that line who might be the wrong person, but I'm fairly sure he isn't now, so those Welsh ancestors are more certain after all.

Hi Celia,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Hi Celia,

Thanks for upgrading to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. It will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the WikiTree site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link to find answers. Go to the Help drop down menu at the top right of your profile and go down to Forum ("G2G") for the link.

I joined because I was investigating possible Kelland ancestors and saw a lot of Kellands on this site but could not find the ones I think are in my family tree and hoped to add them to the list.

It seems I am not able to add people to the list as a 'guest' and have to upgrade. How do you add people to the list? Do you have to say how you are related to them?

Hi Celia,

Yes, it is necessary to upgrade to Family Member to add profiles. Remember doing so is free - all of WikiTree is free.

Once you upgrade to Family Member you will receive additional instructions.

You do not have to indicate your relationship.

Don't hesitate to ask additional questions.

Thank you, I upgraded.

Now I just have to find out how to upload information about people who might be my ancestors and their families.

Here is a process for moving large numbers of people from one web site to another. It might apply for you.

Help:GEDCOM

Also read: Help:GEDCOMpare

This page should be of assistance if you decide to use the GEDCOM process: Current GEDCOMpare Process

Hope this helps.

I have added lots of families starting with one particular person or couple and going back (or forwards) from them, some I found were already on someone else's family trees, which was helpful, and some I 'adopted' because they had been 'orphaned'.

I can't seem to find a shortcut place to the 'root' people for each tree to see if it can display the family tree for that set of related people. I didn't want to start it from myself and work up through all the generations as I don't really want to put the most recent ancestors on there. Is there a way to display family trees of the 'contributions' I've added if they are connected? I did 3 main families and a few odd people here and there who might be possibilities to link to them. (Alternatives if there is more than one with the same name born around the same time in the same area). I have my own tree with all the branches already on ancestry and on a big Excel workbook.

There is more than one way to see family trees.

If a person is linked back at least 2 generations - ex: father and grandfather, a black link button titled "SHOW ANCESTORS" is available to the right of the persons name. Good example is your https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Worsdale-26.

Another method which includes the option of several formats is obtained by clicking on the green "Tree Apps" link in the menu bar. When opened, note there is a menu box which will let you select different types of charts. Once selected don't forget to click on "Go."

If you need more help, send it in a private message so we can move the discussion to emails. It would make it easier to share links and images.
