S t o r y : John and Lorrain

John worked on farms for other people. After he met Gertrude, they eloped and spent their wedding night in a fodder shock in a cornfield because they were afraid to go home.

Later, John and one of Gertrude's brothers stole a pig to keep from going hungry. John got caught, but his brother-in-law didn't. John was sentenced to 5 years in prison but got out in 3 or 3 1/2 for good behavior.

While he was in prison, Gertrude left him for Kurt Alvey. The kids were either placed with relatives or placed in orphanages. Lorraine was in an orphanage until Hanley took her home with him and took care of her. When John got out of prison and went to see her, she was missing her front teeth and he teased her about that, and asked her to whistle!

She lived with John after that, and said that when she didn't go to school she had to cut wood. She also did the cooking and cleaning. And she had a pet pig.

Lorraine was pregnant with Bradley when she got the news that John had died. He was seen chasing a cow that had gotten out. He hung his shirt up on the fence, and after he caught the cow he sat down to milk her and had a heart attack in his barn.
