Adam was born in 1839 (some sources cite 1840) in Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah, Virginia. He was the son of Daniel Coffman Jr and Rebecca White. He was married twice and had a total of eleven children.

First Wife: His married first to Lydia Cooke, daughter of John Yew Cook. They married in 1866 in Shenandoah, Virginia and had seven children together:

  1. George William Coffman (1868-1938)
  2. Verdie F. Coffman (1872-1931)
  3. Lucinda Coffman (1874-1890)
  4. Luther Tilden Coffman (1876-
  5. Martha Alice Coffman (1877-1927)
  6. Ida Catharine Coffman (1880-?)
  7. Annie Rebecca Coffman (1882-1960)

Lydia passed away in 1884 (age 38 yo) in Columbia Furnace, Shenandoah, Virginia

Second Wife: His second wife was Amanda Miller. They married in 1885 in Shenandoah, Virginia and had four children together:

  1. Irene Victoria Coffman (1886-1888)
  2. Edward Welby Coffman (1889-1955)
  3. Elsie May Coffman (1892-1971)
  4. Milton Coffman (1896-1982)

He passed away in 1899 in Shenandoah, Virginia. He is buried in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hamburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

Obituary in the Shenandoah Herald - March 12, 1883: “Mrs. Lydia Coffman, wife of Mr. Adam Coffman departed this life at her home near Columbia Furnace, Feb. 18th, in her 38th year.

The deceased was a member of the Lutheran church for a number of years, and died in the faith of the gospel. She leaves a husband and several small children to mourn her departure. Peace to her ashes.“……excerpted
