Biography

John de Clinton was a younger son of Thomas de Clinton and Mazera.^[1]

Inquisition Post Mortem 1316

Inquisition Post Mortem of John de Clynton, the elder, alias of Coleshull.^[3]

Writ, 13 March, 9 Edw. II. WARWICK. Inq. 15 April, 9 Edw. II. (defective.) Coleshull. The manor (extent given), including a park, held by service of 1d. yearly and 1/2 knight’s fee of John son and heir of John de Clynton of Maxtok, who is under age and was in the wardship of the earl of Warwick, by reason of the manor of Amynton, but now of his executors; which John holds the same of William la Zousch of Haryngworth as parcel of the barony of Cantilupe by service of 1/2 knight’s fee. He held no other lands.

…… son of John, son of the said John the elder, is his next heir, and was aged 12 on the feast of St. Peter ad Vincula …..

Research Notes

I think that this may be the second son of Thomas (d. 1278) mentioned in the British History Online article on Coleshill Manor. If so (and if I'm reading the BHO article correctly), he died in 1316. The article also says his father settled the manor on him in 1259 - if that was done when he came of age, that would mean he was born about 1238.^[4]

That reference states ;- In 1259 Thomas settled the manor on his second son, John, and his heirs, with contingent remainder to another son Osbert, Thomas to retain a life tenancy at a yearly rent of 50s. (fn. 18) THis was referenced as coming from Feet of F. (Dugd. Soc.), no. 778; Dugd. 1008–9

Thomas died in 1278.
