Biography

Charles Cleverley was born in Essex, England.

Charles' birth was registered during Apr-Jun 1845 at Dagenham, Essex, England where his mother's maiden name was recorded as Knight.^[1] He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Dagenham on 27 Apr 1845 the son of Samuel and Sarah Cleverly. ^{[2] [3]}

In 1851 when aged 5 he was living at Upminster Road, Rainham, Essex with parents Samuel (34), a Bricklayer and Sarah (37) and siblings Samuel (11), Sarah (9), Richard (3) and Joseph (5 months). ^[4]

By the 1861 census Charles was aged 17 and an Agricultural Labourer living at Rainham. It appears from the census record that his mother had remarried a William Bell and his mother and stepfather's families had merged. ^[5]

Charles married Maria Vinton, who had, for some years been living nearby, on 22 Nov 1868 at St Mark's, Islington, Middlesex. Charles was recorded as being a Full Age Bachelor and a Stoker living at 5 Southill Road. His father Samuel was a Bricklayer. Maria was a Full Aged Spinster living at 5 Southill Road and her father James Vinton, a Labourer. The witnesses were Samuel Cleverley, probably Charles' older brother, and Charlotte Cleverley. ^[6]

On 16 Jun 1874 the family of three children left London, England on the ship TWEED captained by William Stewart and originally built as a paddle steamer (Punjab) that was converted to a sailing ship.^[2] They arrived at Otago, New Zealand on 14 Sep 1874. Charles' occupation was recorded as Navvy. ^[2]

In 1887 Charles was living at South Oamaru, Otago occupied as a Railway guard. ^[7]

On 07 Apr 1935 Charles, a retired goods-foreman died at Oamaru, Otago. ^{[8] [9] [10]}
