William is estimated to have been born about July 1704. He is known from his baptism record at Hutton dated 6 August 1704 (under the surname Clasie) and similar records for his children (Clazie and Clazy). He is the son of William Clasey and Katherine Scougall. Spelling was variable: Clasey, Clasie, Clazie, Clazy, Clezie, Clezy, were all used, without consistency.
