Biography

Helen was born in about 1879 in Fala & Soutra, Midlothian, Scotland. She was the daughter of John Clark and Isabella (Wight) Clark.

Helen's parents married on 7 June 1878 in forms of the Established Church of Scotland at Maxton, Roxburghshire; John Clark, shepherd, single, 24, of Soutra, son of Alexr Clark, shepherd and Mary m.s. Darling to Isabella Wight, single, dom. servant, 24 usu. resid Maxton, dtr of Walter Wight, farmer and Helen m.s. Sinton Wit: John and George ?Thomson?. Reg Littledean 10th Jun.^[1][2][3]

In the 1881 Scotland Census Helen is aged 2 years. She resides with her parents at Catpair, Parish of Stow, Midlothian, Scotland.^[4]

In the 1891 Scotland Census Helen is aged 12 years and a Scholar. She is residing with her parents at Cathpair, Parish of Stow, Midlothian, Scotland.^[5]

In the 1901 Scotland Census, Helen is aged 22 years and employed as a Dressmaker. She resides with her parents at Cathpair, Parish of Stow, Midlothian, Scotland.^[6]

Helen married Thomas Maxwell Bell (~1879 - 1929) on 7 June 1906 at Cathpair, Parish of Stow, Midlothian. Thomas was a 26 year old coachman of St Ronan's Hotel, Innerleithen. He was the son of Thomas Bell a Hotel Keeper and Elizabeth Waldie M.S. Wilson. Helen was 27 at the time of the marriage. The couple were married by W Workman the Minister of Stow and the the Witnesses were said to be John Bell (assumed to be Thomas' brother) and Elizabeth Soutar (assumed to be Helen's cousin).^[7]

In the 1911 Scotland Census Helen is said to be 32 years old. She resides with her husband of 4 years and their daughter Isabella. The family are living in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire, Scotland.^[8]

Helen died at the age of about 53 on 16 September 1932 in Innerleithen, Peeblesshire, Scotland.^[9] The entry in the Newspaper stated:

Widow of Thomas M Bell, and daughter of John Clark, late of Cathpair, Stow. Funeral today (Mon) at 2pm to Innerleithen Cem. Friends please accept this intimation and invitation.
