Charles Clare and his wife Hannah came from Bridgeport, Dorsetshire, England. They were settlers who arrived in New Plymouth, Taranaki on February 24th 1842, on the ship Timandra. They left Plymouth, England on November 2nd 1841, barque Timandra one of the six New Zealand Company ships bringing settlers to Taranaki, New Zealand. [1] Charles Clare, aged 20, was a carpenter, Hannah was 23 years old.
The Clare family of Bell Block was one of those forced to flee Taranaki during the troubles of the 1850s. A testimonial to William Gray who made arrangements for their welfare can be found in Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle 27th April 1861, signed by Charles and Henry Clare, J. Clare, T. Clare, H. Clare and another Charles Clare [2]
Charles Clare was buried aged 43 in Bell Block Cemetery, St Luke's Church, Mangati Road, New Plymouth
