Alexander Hastie Chrystal was born about 1848. He was the son of David Chrystal and Elizabeth (Hastie) Chrystal.

^[4] DUBBO'S FIRST TELEGRAPHIST.
THE LATE MR. A. CHRYSTAL.
The sad death of Mr. Alexander Chrystal, as a result of a motor car collision on the Cobborah Road, near Wellington, last week, removes a citizen for many years connected with the west.
Deceased was 76 years of age and a native of Derby (England), coming to Australia when a child. He joined the N.S.W. postal and telegraph department when the telegraph system only reached Rydal and there were six men in the telegraph branch. He was for a time stationed at Rydal, and when the telegraph was extended to Dubbo, he took charge of the Dubbo telegraph office, being the sole officer. There was no messenger boys in those days, neither was there any train service, so he had to make the journey from Rydal to Dubbo on horseback.
From Dubbo he was transferred to Wellington as postmaster in 1875,where he was for thirty years postmaster. He then came back to the Dubbo office, and from here was transferred to Albury, where he resigned from the department, after forty years of faithful service.
After leaving the department deceased look up land at Comobella, where he made his home and resided up to the time of his death.
He was educated at Scots' College, Melbourne.
He is survived by his widow and family of seven, one daughter and six sons.
