Janet Jessie Chisholm was born on 8 October 1810 in Trenton, Nova Scotia. Her parents were Angus Chisholm and Margaret Fraser. ^[1]

1829 - Death of Angus Chisholm

Angus Chisholm died in 1829 when his daughter Jessie was 19 years old. His death left Margaret a widow with 9 children to raise, six girls and three boys. But Margaret was a force of nature; she oversaw the family farm in Trenton and also opened and ran Chisholm's Hotel at the corner of George St. and Provost St. in downtown New Glasgow. ^[2]

Two years after her father died Janet Jessie Chisholm was 21 years old when she married Roderick MacGregor in 1831. She was the oldest child of Angus Chisholm and Margaret Fraser.

Roderick MacGregor was 29 years old when he married Jessie Chisholm on 9 December 1831. The hand written marriage bond was signed by Roderick MacGregor and his brother Robert MacGregor, but the bond did not name the location of the marriage ceremony. ^[3] Roderick MacGregor was a successful merchant in New Glasgow.

1867 - Marriage of James MacGregor

James Drummond MacGregor was 29 years old when he married Elizabeth Adelaide McColl on 12 December 1867 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was a family affair; the officiant was Rev. Peter Gordon MacGregor, who was both a paternal uncle of the groom and a brother-in-law of the bride - Rev. MacGregor's wife Caroline McColl was an older sister of the bride. ^{[4] [5]}

1871 - Canada Census

The 1871 census was the first federal census. It started on 2 April 1871, and had 211 questions. ^[6]

1871 - Death of her husband

Roderick MacGregor died on 29 May 1871 at New Glasgow, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada, just six weeks after the census. He was survived by his wife, newly a widow. Their son James Drummond MacGregor was the informant on his father's civil death registration. ^[8]

1881 Canada Census

The 1881 Census was the second federal census. It began on April 4, 1881 and had 172 questions across eight schedules. ^[9]

Jannet McGregor, resident of New Glasgow, Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada, head of household, was a widow with three adult children and one domestic servant. Census enumerator Daniel Campbell surveyed the McGregor household on an unknown date. ^[10]

Death and Legacy

Janet Jessie (Chisholm) MacGregor died on 26 August 1888. She was buried at Riverside Cemetery, New Glasgow beneath a monument shared with her husband Roderick MacGregor. ^[11]
