Morgan was born in 1840 at Falmouth, Nova Scotia. He served three years in the U.S. Civil War as a soldier in the 18th Illinois Infantry, seeing action at Fort Donelson and Shiloh, was honorably discharged and received a pension afterwards. He was described variously a "mariner", "master mariner" and "sea captain" in Massachusetts after the Civil War, and returned to Nova Scotia around 1891 to be a farmer. He had one son, Samuel Locke Chisholm, from his first marriage in Massachusetts (to Naomi (Porter) Gates[1]) and five children from his second marriage in Nova Scotia (to Miss Arabella Chisholm[2]). He passed away in 1905 at Highland Village, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. He was buried at the nearby Geddes Cemetery, but no headstone survives.
Morgan was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Loomis Post, DuQuoin, Illinois, Post Number 106. His transfer card is preserved by the family, and an image has been uploaded to WikiTree. Morgan married Naomi Gates at Boston on Aug 8th and his brother John married Mary J Foster at Boston on Aug 1st. The entries are on the same page of the marriage records, from which one assumes they were in close contact in 1868.
