Biography
William Charles Chilman was born before 1820. He was the son of Richard Chilman and Elizabeth Chilman [1].
William marries Mary Ann Roberts and they had 5 children between 1847 and 1855.
In the 1851 census at Shoreditch, Middlesex he is shown with his family as: William Chas Chilman 30, Mary Ann 24 wife, Emily Sarah 2, Annie 0 [2]. A further census in 1861 shows William as 40 with his 5 year old daughter Maud [3].
Between the 1861 census and 1864 William travels to New Zealand with his family children as Emily, Annie, Charles and Maud. It is possible they came to New Zealand to follow other family as we don't see William's wife Mary Ann listed on the passenger list. They sailed on the ship Scimitar in 1864 arriving in Auckland as William, Emily, Annie, Charles and Maria [4].
He passed away in 1865 in New Zealand and is buried in the Te Henui Cemetery, Taranaki, New Zealand [5]. However, his will in probate shows as going to Mary Chilman in Feb 1875 so did Mary travel to NZ and is not listed on the passenger list for the Scimitar or did she travel separately [6].
