The Will of Nathaniel Chater was signed in 1815 and proved in 1822 following his death. He described himself as a glass cutter of Saint Dunstans Hill in the City of London. He left one hundred pounds to his brothers James Chater, Richard Chater, Eliezer Chater and Joseph Chater and his sister Philadelphia Chater. He left the majority of his estate to his wife Hannah Chater and other bequests were for his niece Ann Philadelphia Wilson.

Nathaniel was named as the deceased husband in the Will of Hannah (Leathley) Chater. The will was written in 1833 with a codicil signed in 1838 and was proved in 1844 when Hannah Chater died.

Children

There is no evidence that he had any children and none are mentioned in his will or in the will of his wife Hannah. Hannah's will does mention a large number of family members, and she bequeathed most of her possessions to nephews and nieces.

Professional life

Nathaniel was a glass cutter and manufacturer, at St Dunstan's Hill, in the City of London. His father-in-law John Leathley was also glass cutter and they were in business together. His mother-in-law, Sarah, may have continued the business. In 1800 they were insured together by the Sun Insurance Company: Sarah Leathley, St Dunstans Alley, St Dunstans Hill, glass cutter, Richard Halbert and Nathaniel Chater.[6]

On 24 December 1793 the partnership of another business was disposed and ...all persons having any demands upon the said partnership are requested to apply to Mr Nathaniel Chater of St Dunstan's Hill in the City of London, Glass Cutter who is duly authorised and empowered by the said parties to receive all monies and satisfy all debts of the said Bennett and Bottomley.[7]

Chater Family and the Sandemanian Church

Nathaniel was born into a non-conformist family and his uncle John Chater was one of the founders of the London congregation of the Sandemanian Church, but other family members were also members. His wife's family were also Sandemanians. The history of the Chater Family and the Sandemanian Church has some of this history.
