Biography

Richard Knight Causton, 1st and last Baron Southwark (1843-1929) was the son of Joseph Caustonand his wife Mary Anne née Potter.

He married Selina Mary Chambers, daughter of Sir Thomas Chambers, on 10 August 1871at St Mary's, Bryanston Square, London.

He was the Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for Colchester between 1880 and 1885. He was the Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Liberal) for West Southwark between 1888 and 1910.

He held the office of a Lord of Treasury between 1892 and 1895. He held the office of Paymaster-General between 1905 and 1910. He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1906.

He was created 1st Baron Southwark, of Southwark, co. London [U.K.] on 13 July 1910.

He held the office of Lieutenant for the City of London. He was president of the London Chamber of Commerce in 1913. He was chairman of the printing firm of Sir Joseph Causton and Sons Ltd.

He died aged 85 dsp on 23 February 1929 at his town house 12,Devonshire Place, Marylebone, London W.
