Haplogroup R-M173 (Y-DNA Haplogroup R1)

In human genetics, Haplogroup R1 is a Y-chromosome DNA haplogroup.

In molecular evolution, a haplogroup (from the Greek: ἁπλούς, haploûs, "onefold, single, simple") is a group of similar haplotypes that share a common ancestor having the same single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mutation in all haplotypes.

R1 Splits into R1a and R1b. Individuals from the southern part of the Steppe are believed to have carried predominantly lineages belonging to haplogroup R1b (L23 and subclades), while the people of northern forest-steppe to the north would have belonged essentially to haplogroup R1a.

Y-DNA Haplogroup R1a is found mainly in Eastern European, Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent.

Y-DNA Haplogroup R1b is the dominant haplogroup in Western Europe and also occurs in smaller numbers in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and in Africa around Lake Chad. Its Western European members mostly belong to two large branches:

  • R1b-M405/U106/S21
  • R1b-P312

See Wikipedia:Haplogroup for relationships among haplogroups.
