Smiths Falls, Ontario was established on July 1, 1867 through confederation. It was originally established in 1786 when Lieutenant Thomas Smyth, a United Empire Loyalist, was issued 400 acres of land along the Rideau River. The area was then purchased by Abel Russell Ward in 1825. In 1826, Abel Ward began to build a settlement. The building of the Rideau Canal, completed in 1832, greatly expanded the settlement, then known as Wardsville.
The town was incorporated in 1883.
