Bytown, Upper Canada was located at the junction of the Rideau Canal and the Ottawa River. It originally consisted of two settlements called Upper Town and Lower Town. Prior to the establishment of the town, the settlements went by the names Collins Landing, and later Bellow's Landing. It was then named Bytown in 1827.
