The first inhabitants of what is now the Algoma District were Ojibwa tribes from the Algonkin nation.
Algoma District, Canada West was established by government proclamation as a provisional judicial district in the Province of Canada, in 1858. It comprised the area north of the French River west to the Pigeon River and all Canadian islands in Lake Huron and Lake Superior.
Algoma District, Ontario came into being in 1867. It has since undergone several changes:
- In 1871, Thunder Bay District, Ontario was formed from part of Algoma District.
- In 1888, Manitoulin District, Ontario was formed from part of Algoma District.
- In 1907, Sudbury District, Ontario was formed from part of Algoma District.
- In 1912, Temiskaming District, Ontario was formed, now known as Timiskaming District, Ontario
It is now comprised of 22 Single Tier Municipalities.
