Biography

The son of Robert Caperton and Elizabeth (Gambrell) Caperton, Melvin Caperton was born in Wayne County, Tennessee[citation needed] in 1905, residing with his family by 1920 in Collinwood, Tennessee.[1] In 1930, Melvin lived with a cousin, Thomas Gambrell, and his family, residing in Civil District 1 of Lawrence County, Tennessee.[2]

Melvin married Mary Scott (1920-1973), the daughter of Charles Scott and Isadora Chauncey, marrying in Lawrence County, Tennessee on May 1, 1936,[3] having two children together:

  1. Ethel Marie Russell (1937-2010)
  2. Frank David Caperton (1939-2017)

Melvin and his family made their home with his parents, residing in Wayne County's Civil District 7, where Melvin worked as a farm laborer on his father's farm.[4] Melvin died, at the age of 35, from a farm accident, passing away after a heavily loaded farm truck rolled over him, crushing his skull.[5] Melvin Caperton is buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Wayne County, Tennessee.[6]
