James Callow was born in 1865 in Isle of Man, the son of Anne Callow (nee Murray) and James Callow.[1]
He was baptised August 3 1865, in Maughold, Garff, Isle of Man. His father was a tailor.[2]
Listed in 1871 census in Isle of Man as a 6 year old.[3]
He married Margaret Cameron in 1891 in Victoria, Australia.[4][5] Their children were:
Margaret died in June 1900 in Benalla, Victoria.[5]
James remarried in 1905, to Margaret's sister Agnes Elizabeth May Cameron.[10][11] Their children were:[11]
James died on 9 June 1945 at his home, 62 Smythe Street, Benalla, aged 80.[1][11]
OBITUARY - MR. JAMES CALLOW, SENR. BENALLA ENSIGN 19 JUNE 1945[12] The death occurred at his residence, Smythe Street, Benalla, on Saturday last, of Mr James Callow at the age of 80 years. Deceased, who was born at the Isle of Man, came to Australia when 25 years of age, and came to Benalla to follow his trade as a baker. He was for many years employed at Gregerson's store and bakery, and continued with this firm until they disposed of the business to Mr R. E. Thomson. The late Mr Callow made two trips overseas to visit his native country and relatives. For many years he has lived in retirement in Benalla. He had a wonderful memory, and was very entertaining with reminiscences of the olden days. He made many friends who will regret to learn or his death. He was one of the oldest members of the Oddfellows' Lodge, and was very popular with a large circle of friends. Deceased was twice married. His first marriage was to Miss Margaret Cameron at Winton. Of this union there was a family of three sons, Thomas (deceased), James (Benalla), Richard (Glen Iris), and one daughter, Margaret (Horsham). On the death of his wife, he later married her sister, Miss Elizabeth Cameron, of Winton, who survives him, as well as a family of three sons and one daughter, viz, Stan (Benalla). George (A.I.F.). Ian (A.I.F'.), and Jean (Mrs Russell, Melbourne). Another daughter, Florence, predeceased her father. Burial took place at the Winton cemetery on Monday afternoon last. The coffin was carried by Messrs R. Callow, S. Callow, G. McLaughlin and L. Squires. The pall was supported by Messrs Jack Eddy, G. Willis, W. Clarke, B. Arnott, R. Gregerson, C. Harris, V. Little and H. Richardson, Rev. Alistair McLean readthe burial service. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs Clancy and Diggle.
