Andrew Buchanan was born in 1690 in Glasgow. He was christened on 29 January 1691 at Glasgow[1] .
His parents were George Buchanan and Mary Maxwell[2]
He married Marrion Mountgomery on 30 January 1723 in Glasgow[3]
Andrew was a merchant in Glasgow with tobacco plantations in Virginia , it is thought he owned up to 300 slaves and in 1723 became Glasgow's largest importer of tobacco owning five ships. Andrew’s other business interests included the King Street sugar house in Glasgow, linen works, ropeworks and a sailcloth factory. He was also one of the founders of the Ship Bank in Glasgow in 1749.[4]His name was removed from a Wharf Development after a petition in 2020[5], He was dean of Guild in 1728 & 1729 and Provost of Glasgow in 1740 and 1741[6]
He died on 20th December 1759 and is buried in Ramshorn Graveyard Glasgow, Glasgow City, Scotland[7][8]
