Samuel was born in 1738 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. He was the son of Samuel Alexander Buchanan and Mary Martha (Ryan) Buchanan.
When Samuel was about 28 he married Elizabeth Duncan in 1766 in Augusta, Virginia, USA. The couple had one child: William Buchannon.
When Samuel was about 29 he married Elizabeth Cochran in 1767 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.
Samuel died at the age of about 52 on 15 January 1790 in Washington, Virginia, USA.
