Biography

Eugenia (Jean) Buchanan married the Rev. John Chrisman Hawk August 9, 1905. The young couple were dispatched almost immediately to China as Methodist missionaries. They served in that capacity until WWIi when they were interned in a Japanese POW camp. They were released and returned home to Glade Springs, Va in 1943 but Dr Hawk was in poor health from the years of incarceration and died in 1946. Jean remained active in the church until her death in1972. The couple are buried at Emory and Henry University graveyard in Emory, Virginia.

Daughter Mary Ellen Saunders wrote an account of their mission years. Unfinished Business in China.
