Obituary MRS. A. DRURY The death occurred at her home at Oxley Island on June 12 of Mrs. Annie Drury. The late Mrs. Drury, who was 84 years of age, had been in ill health for several years. As Captain Annie Bryans, she was the first Salvation Army officer appointed to Taree and opened the work on the Manning. Some of the oldest residents still recall her fine singing voice, which led the singing at Salvation Army meetings, long before a Band was formed. The late Mrs. Drury was also a fluent speaker. In her more active years, she was well-versed in literature and had wide general knowledge and interests. She was a native of Albury and, as a young woman, left her trade as a tailoress to enter the service of the Salvation Army. She remained a stalwart of the Army throughout her lifetime. After her marriage to Nathaniel Drury, who predeceased her five and a half years ago, they lived in Taree for some years before moving to Oxley Island 47 years ago. The late Mrs. Drury will be remembered by the older residents of Oxley Island for her neighbourliness, sterling character and refined, gentle manner. Throughout her long illness, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter Mrs. Wilkins, assisted by other daughters from time to time. She is survived by two sons, Alfred (Minimbah) and Victor (Oxley Island), and four daughters, Mrs. Carr (Sydney), Mrs. Bray (Moorland), Mrs. Wilkins (Oxley Island) and Mrs. Wytton (Burwood). One son, Percy, a returned soldier from World War I, died 21 years ago. At the expressed wish of the late Mrs. Drury, Major Powley (Ret.) a former officer in charge of the Salvation Army Corps at Taree, returned to Taree to officiate at the funeral service in the Salvation Army Hall. The funeral was largely attended. A memorial service to the late Mrs. Drury was conducted by Major Powley on Sunday, June 14. |
