Edward de Brus, son of Robert de Bruce and Marjory of Carrick.[1]
His three other brothers were executed following Robert's defeats at Methven & Dairy. A fearless commander, he aided his brother during his guerilla-style campaign of raids on English held castles. By mid-1308 Edward had overrun Galloway, while his brother had control of much of the north. He failed in his attempt to take Stirling in 1313 & made a truce with Philip de Mowbray which made the battle of Bannockburn inevitable.
Edward had fought beside his brother, Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn. Following their victory over the English at Bannockburn, Robert controlled much of Scotland and was campaigning as far south as Yorkshire and Lancashire. The King of Tyrone, Donal O'Neil, saw an opportunity to use the resurgent Scots in his own struggle against the English in Ulster, inviting Edward to bring an army to Ireland. Edward arrived "in the summer of 1315" and led his men in a difficult three year campaign. [2] [3]
Edward became sixth Earl of Carrick by a grant from his brother, and was made King of Ireland, 2nd May 1316. He was also Lord of Galloway 2 May 1316.
In 1317, Edward's brother Robert briefly joined him to campaign in Munster. [4]
He was killed at the battle of Dundalk (Dun Delgan), often referred to as the Battle of Faughart), 14th October 1318. [5][6]
