Biography

Elsie was born in 1896 and her birth was registered ^[1] in the third quarter on GRO. The date is taken from her birth certificate ^[2]

She was the second of three children. Her father John was a member of the Protestant sect The Plymouth Brethren and owned a shop selling china and basketry in Taunton, so she grew up in a relatively well-off family compared to many around her. However her father was very strict about what his children could do and especially on the Sabbath when they could not, for example, listen to the radio.

According to her daughter Pamela ^[3], she would have liked to have stayed on at school and had the academic ability to benefit from it, but her father wanted her to help in the shop. Later she felt resentment because her younger sister Edie was given the educational opportunity but did not have the necessary academic ability. According to Pamela she was an avid reader and would take out 3 or 4 novels every week from the library when she lived in Taunton.

She could play the piano and later. living in Weston-Super-Mare, had her own upright. She often had cut flowers from the garden in her house. She kept her house very clean and tidy and would dust talking to herself in a whisper.

In Taunton she took part in the Congregational Church but later joined the Methodists, and was active in the church in Weston-Super-Mare.

She developed an inoperable brain tumour early in 1966 and died of this shortly afterwards. She is buried in the cemetery in Weston-Super-Mare not far from the house in which she had lived.
