Biography

Elenor Brereton[1]

Eleanor was born prior to 12th day before Kalends of August, 1405, [which was 21 July] because her father was married to his second wife by then [on that day at St Peter's, Rome, William de Brereton, knight, nobleman, and Ellen (Elena) his wife, noblewoman, of the diocese of Lincoln, were issued an indult De Plenaria Remissione, that is that the confessor of their choice may grant them, being penitent, plenary remission, once only, namely in the article of death.[2] An indult is a licence granted by the Pope authorizing an act that the common law of the Church does not sanction.]

Elenor was the daughter of Sir William Brereton,[1] and his wife, Angella Venables.

Elenor married Sir John Savage of Clifton, the son of Sir John Savage and his wife, Maud, daughter and heir of Robert Swinerton.[1]

Death

1422, Runcorn, Cheshire, England[3]

Research Notes

Possible Daughter Dulcie

Dulcie Savage, wife of Henry Bold, is shown on WikiTree as daughter of Eleanor's son John Savage-199 and Katherine Stanley. In a 2022 post in soc.genealogy.medieval, Douglas Richardson suggested that her parents were Eleanor Brereton and her husband. As Brad Verity pointed out in a response, this is a possibility but not a certainty. For full discussion, see the conversation in soc.genealogy.medieval.

There's no (non family tree) source that gives her more than a single Christian name. Could we go with the more common one and add where the other is found in the bio or notes? I believe it's Savage of the Ards that gives her as Elizabeth and the rest have her as Eleanor.
