Biography

Maria Elizabeth Braunschweig was born around 1827 in Germany. ^[1] According to a user-submitted source, she was born on 21 January 1828, in Ottweiler, Rheinland, Prussia, Germany (currently Ottweiler, Saarland, Germany), but documents were not located to this effect. She died around 1888 at Steuben, New York, United States and is buried at North Loon Lake Cemetery at Wayland, Steuben, New York, ^[2] as are both her husbands, Christian Bernhard John Kausch ^[3] and Adam Strick. ^[4] According to a user-submitted source, she was the daughter of Johann Jacob Braunschweig (1802-1876), a tailor, and Elisabetha Catharina Kiefer (1807-1880), married 31 Jul 1825 in Ottweiler, Rheinland, Prussia, Germany (currently Ottweiler, Saarland, Germany). ^[5] The family migrated to Dansville, New York from Ottweiler in 1845. ^[6]

Elizabeth married Christian Bernhard John Kausch (abt 1824-abt 1855) on 04 Feb 1847 at South Dansville, New York, United States. ^[7] The marriage ended with his death around 23 Jan 1855. ^[3] She remarried before 1865, Adam Strick (abt 1821-abt 1881), ^[8] and died 33 years after Christian, around 1888. ^[2] Her second marriage probably took place around 1859 (see comments below).

According to the censuses, Christian and Elizabeth had at least four children. Mary and Caroline appear in the 1850 census in their father's household, ^[1] and Jacob and Christian, appear in 1865 as step-sons of Adam Strick. ^[8]

An additional child, Amelia, who died in infancy (1850-1851), appears in a user-submitted source. ^[9] A Find a Grave entry was located for an Emilia Kausch, who is probably the same child. ^[10]

Elizabeth and Adam also had several children. In the 1865 census, six children are listed, three, Caroline, Jacob and Christian are clearly from Elizabeth's first marriage, and are listed as Adam's step-children. ^[8] Another, Mary Bradley, appears as Adam's daughter, but she is just the right age to be Elizabeth's daughter Mary who appeared in the 1850 census aged 3. It is not clear, however, just whose daughter she is, her birth date predates Adam's marriage to Elizabeth, but no evidence was located that he was married previously. So without further information, she has been considered to be Elizabeth's daughter with Christian, Mary . The last two children in the census, Adam and Julia Ann, are most likely her children with Adam; the possibility of their being step-children is possible but unlikely.

The first two boys, Christian and Jacob, appear with their stepfather's surname, Strick, but documents show they maintained their father's surname, Kousch/Kausch, after his death in 1855.
