Biography

Beatrice Brewes, daughter of Peter de Brewes, Knt., by his second wife, Joan Howard, was born about 1366 (aged 60 in 1426).^[1][2]

Beatrice married Hugh Shirley, Knt., (also known as Ralph Basset, Lord of Drayton), son of Sir Thomas de Shirley and Isabel de Meynhill.^[1] The date of their marriage is unknown: their son Ralph was born in April 1391, and so the marriage was likely to have been before 1390. They had one son and four daughters:

• Ralph, Knt., aka Ralph Basset, born 23 April 1391, died in France about 1443, married Joan Basset and Alice Cokayne and had issue with both wives^[1]
• Isabel, wife of Sir John Cokayne^[1]
• Elizabeth^[1]
• Nichole^[1]
• Joan, wife of Robert Newmarch^[1]

Her husband, Sir Hugh, was killed while fighting for King Henry IV at the Battle of Shrewsbury on 22 July 1403. In 1426, Beatrice was heir to her brother, John Brewes, Knt., inheriting manors in Buckinghamshire and Sussex.^[1]

Beatrix died in 1440.^[1]
