Biography

Lucy (Brand) Lawrence was a convict on the First Fleet.

Lucy Brand alias Wood was convicted on July 19, 1786 in London of Felony (theft) and sentenced to seven years transportation. It was her second offence for stealing Convict Records Australia Her case was heard at the Old Bailey. [1]

. She was transported aboard the Lady Penrhyn arriving at New South Wales in January 1788 after almost a year at sea having departed in February 1787. [2] Lucy was held at Newgate prison prior to departure in preparation for transport Ancestry Document Viewer: UK Prison Records

She married Charles Repeat (1766- 1816) another first fleet convict on 17 February 1788 at Port Jackson. Name Lucy Wood Marriage Date 1788 Marriage Place Sydney, New South Wales Registration Date 1788 Registration Place Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Spouse Charles Repeat [3] Lucy and Charles were sent to Norfolk Island aboard the Sirius in March 1790. They had a child on the island (death details unknown). By 1791 the Repeats were subsisting on a small lot at Sydney Town. In 1793 Repeat was renting two acres from Lieutenant Edward Abbott. In February 1805 he was victualled as a constable and was listed as having a wife and one child. the couple relocated to Van Diemens Land aboard the Lady Nelson in February 1808.

Charles passed away in 1816 after falling from a cart, and she married Robert Lawrence on April 21, 1817 at Hobart. Her name was registered as Lucy Du Peete. Robert was 62 and she was 59. Both signed with their 'mark', and are listed as 'free'. Libraries Tasmania Marriage Record


She is believed to have passed away in Tasmania in 1820, however, the death record states her age at death to be 35 (believed to be an error as she would have been 62 at least).

Research Notes

There is no death record for a Robert Lawrence in Tasmania however there is another marriage for a Robert Lawrence registered as a freeman, to a Susannah House in 1820 (convict). The age on the marriage record for him is age 56, and the couple departed Tasmania in 1824 for Rio De Janeiro - this may be the same Robert as he was illiterate perhaps he didn't know his age?
