Ethel May Brand was born on 12 Apr 1883 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom^[1], daughter of George Brand (1859 - 1931) and Mary Ann Clay (Venimore) Brand (1861 - 1936).

Ethel immigrated to Australia at 1 years old with her parents and sister. They sailed aboard the "Quetta", arriving in Mackay, Queensland on 7 Feb 1885.^[2]

Ethel married George Hesp (1865 - 1953) on 23 Dec 1899 at her parents property, "Allendale", in Marian, Queensland, Australia.^[3]
