Biography

Maurice Oliver Braddock was born in July 1913 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England to Jonas Archibald Braddock and Lillian Ada Braddock (Nee Brown).[1]

27th August 1926, when Maurice was 13 years old, his mother (Lillian) died at aged 48, Cause of death was unknown, Jonas (Maurice's Father) soon married there house keeper in late November 1926 in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England.[2] they only had one child together, William Braddock born in 20th January 1928[3] in Macclesfield, Cheshire England.

In early 1929, Maurice Braddock and is family Jonas, Gladys, Graham and William had planned to settle in New Zealand because two of Maurice's brothers, Jonas and Ewin have already settled in Auckland, New Zealand and Maurice's father Jonas really wanted to catch-up with his old school friend in Sydney, Australia. That following year in 15th March 1930[4] the Braddocks family departed from London, England on a RMS Ormonde to Sydney but before they went to New Zealand they stays for a couple of days.
When the Braddock's where in Sydney, Jonas started to look for his old school friend, who had been a small cobbler in England, and had gone to Australia to make his fortune. Jonas asked many people in Sydney but everyone he asked had never heard of the name before, Shortly before Jonas and his family was due to leave for New Zealand, he went into a “while-u-wait” repair shop to get some shoe laces. Jonas mentioned the name of his friends to the cobbler, who shook his head, and replied, “But of course there is a big wholesale dealer by that name.” The school friend had indeed made his “fortune.” He turned out to be the owner of a five-storey warehouse, a mansion at Pott's Point, and a Limousine car with a chauffeur, in which the Braddock's were driven all over Sydney.

After the “non-fiction” like experience in finding his fathers school friend, Maurice and his family soon arrives in Auckland, New Zealand in 6th May 1930,
when they walked off the ship to the arrivals hall, a reporter from Auckland Star pulled them to one side and asked if they have a story about the journey from England to New Zealand, The Braddock family shore did, this article was tiled; STRANGE FAMILY, DAUGHTER, 43; SON, 2. NEW ARRIVAL'S EXPERIENCE[5], and Jonas was very proud of this Article, for some years after.

On 17th December 1939 at Church of Christ in West Street, Auckland, New Zealand, Pastor Win. Campbell married Hazel Ada Penman to Maurice,[6] at that time Mauice occupation was a Travelling Salesman, Two years later on 16th Feburary 1942, Hazel and Maurice had a son named PRIVATE Braddock in Glamis, Auckland New Zealand, they asked for no visitors to come see them for seven days.[7]


During the Second World War, about the time his son was born, and as the Japanese were rapidly advancing across the Pacific, Maurice Braddock was one of those called up for military service but Maurice Oliver Braddock did not like the idea of war and killing people[8] within the process, Maurice failed to report and pleaded conscientious objection to military service, he was sent to a defenlter's camp in June 1942, Maurice, In 16th September 1942 when Maurice “fell” off a five-storey building into Elliott Street, he died while being taken to the Auckland Hospital.

Maurice Oliver Braddock was buried on 12th August 1942 at Hillsborough Cemetery, Auckland, New Zealand (Area 4, Block 0, Lot No.335).[9]

FATAL FALL TO STREET
A man aged 28, Maurice Oliver Braddock, fell from the fifth storey window of a building in Elliott Street at 9 a.m. yesterday and died on the way to hospital. He was not known to the staff in the building. He had been an inmate of an Auckland hospital for some weeks, His wife and child live at Grey Lynn.

VERDICT OF SUICIDE
A verdict that Braddock committed suicide while he was insane was returned by the Coroner (Mr F, K. Hunt, S.M.) at the inquest into the death of Maurice Oliver Braddock, married, aged 28. Braddock jumped from one of the top floors of a city building on August 11, suffering injuries from which he died before he reached hospital.
