Margaret was born in 1873. Her birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1873 in Chard, Somerset, England.[1]
Margaret Grace Bondfield CH PC was a British Labour politician, trade unionist and women's rights activist. She became the first female cabinet minister, and the first woman to be a privy counsellor in the UK, when she was appointed Minister of Labour in the Labour government of 1929–31.
She had earlier become the first woman to chair the General Council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Margaret Grace Bondfield, who never married, maintained her good health and interest in life until her final illness in 1953. She moved to a nursing home in Sanderstead, Surrey, where she died aged eighty years on 16 June 1953. Her death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1953 in Surrey Mid-eastern, England.[2]
At her cremation in Golders Green Crematorium the congregation sang the popular hymn "To Be a Pilgrim". The Labour Party was fully represented; Clement Attlee, then-Leader of the Labour Party and former UK Prime Minister, gave the address.
