Buried Killard, Clare, Ireland.
BIRTH George was either 76 or 78 at the time of his 1829 marriage.
George Blackall of Killard, Co. Clare succeeded his father. Besides farming Killard, he farmed many other places in the neighbourhood and used to bring his cattle as far as Cork, a big journey in pre-railway times.
He is listed in `Co. of Clare: List of Freeholders for the year 1821'.
MARRIAGES George appears to have been married at least twice; the gap of nineteen years between the death of his first wife Marcella Burnell and his marriage to Fanny Hall suggests that there may have been another wife between these two.
Although a Protestant, George conformed 9 Nov 1776 as his mother was a Roman Catholic and it was held in Clarke v. Parsons Smith & ors. (Exch. 23 Nov 1754) that a person born of one Popish parent was deemed to be a Papist unless he conformed. This case was reported in Gorges Howard's Cases on the laws against the growth of Popery, published 1775, and in the following year Protestant George enrolled as a convert.[1] This Gilbertian conversion was doubtless effected as a safeguard against `Protestant Discoverers', who might otherwise have deprived him of his property.
DEATH The Limerick Chronicle of 30 Oct 1830 and the Ennis Chronicle of Wednesday 3 Nov 1830 appear to have garbled reports of George's death. The latter says `At Kildimo, in this County, Mr. Henry Blackall.' The Clare Journal of 28 Oct 1830 had the incorrect notice; the issue of Thu 4 Nov 1830 corrected this, confirming that the man who died was Mr George Blackall of Killard, father of Henry.
