Biography
William Birtles, born in East Taieri to Peter Birtles and Mary Jones.
He married Anne Maria Joyce at the age of 22. They had 5 children in their marriage.
In 1885 he and his neighbour, Matthew Baxter made joint application to occupy land in the East Taieri district.
William passed away at age 31. He is buried at Old Oamaru Cemetery.
William's widow, Anne Maria was later to remarry to Matthew Baxter.
