Biography

Judith Birdsall was baptized at St. Stephen, Norwich, Norfolk, England on June 2, 1611, daughter of Henry and Agnes (Kempe) Birdsall. [1][2] [3]

Judith married Henry Cooke at Salem, Massachusetts in June of 1639. [1] [4] [5][6]

  • 1649: December 10: Henry Cooke of Salem mortgaged his house, butcher shop and an acre to land to Henry Birdsall. [1]
  • 1662: May 21: Widow Judith Cooke conveyed land of Henry and a portion of what was called 'Sharp's lot' to Joshua Rea. [7]
  • 1667: May 17: Judith Cooke, widow and exectutrix of the estate of her late husband Henry, sold 10 acres in Salem to John Small. [8]

Henry Cooke died at Salem on December 25, 1661. [4]

He died intestate and administration of his estate was granted to widow Judith and son Isaac, aged 22, on June 24, 1662. [9]

The entire estate was left to widow Judith, until such time as the children came of age. They were listed as:

  • Isaac age 22
  • Samuel age 20
  • John age 14
  • Henry age 8
  • Judith age 18
  • Rachel age 16
  • Martha and Mary age 12
  • Hannah age 4 [9]

Judith died there on September 11, 1689. [4]

Her estate was initially inventoried [23: 9 m: 1689] and administered by eldest son Isaac. [10]

In November, 1693, her son Samuel Cooke petitioned the court, to be appointed administrator, indicating the he was then the eldest surviving son of Henry and Judith Cooke of Salem, deceased, as his brother Isaac was now also deceased. In 1694, he indicated to the court that his brother Isaac's estate had been intermingled with that of his mother's legacy, and he was unable to determine an accurate assessment and inventory. The petition for bond was also signed by John Pudney and Robert Moulton. [10]

Birdsalls did not emigrate until 1632. Judith had to be born in Yorkshire.
