Alexander Bennie was baptised on 24 September 1838 in the parish of Ecclesmachan, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, the son of Alexander Bennie and Christian Dykes.[1] He was likely a few days or a few weeks old at the time and was probably born in Ecclesmachan.
In the 1841 census Alexander, aged 2, lived at Catridge in the parish of Linlithgow with his father Alexander (age 30), his mother Christian (age 35) and sister Isabella, aged 8.[2]
At the time of the 1851 census Alexander, aged 12, lived at Western Duntarvie, Abercorn, West Lothian, with his father Alexander, aged 44, his mother Christian, aged 48 and sister Janet, aged 6.[4]
In the 1861 census Alexander, aged 22, lived in Abercorn, West Lothian, with his father Alexander, aged 54, his mother Christian, aged 58 .[5]
Alexander married Elizabeth Aitken on 14 June 1861 in Kirknewton, Midlothian.[6] The witnesses were Thomas Aitken and Janet Binnie, possibly a sibling each of the bride and groom.

Research Notes
Although the surname was spelled Bennie at Alexander's baptism, the predominant spelling for his father and siblings was Binnie, which is why Binnie has been used for the last name at birth.
Ages on the 1841 census: instructions to census enumerators in 1841 were to round ages down to the nearest multiple of five. This was not applicable to ages below 15. It means that Alexander's parents may have been up to four years older, provided they had told the enumerator their correct age and no mistakes were made in the rounding.
The St Bernard registration district of Edinburgh where Alexander's death was registered only existed from 1920 to 1929.
