Biography

John was born about 1740.

In 1773, John (a yeoman) was named as the son of John Billingham, yeoman of Huntley, Gloucestershire, England, when his father died intestate and his mother Sarah gave consent for administration to be granted to her son John^[1]

John's mother Sarah, widow, died in 1792 at Huntley, Gloucestershire, England and was buried on the 27th May 1792.

On the 27th January 1793, John Billingham, bachelor, and Hannah Read (or Beard), spinster, were married by licence at St. John the Baptist, Huntley, Gloucestershire, England. Witnessed by Daniel Billingham and James Dobbs.^[2] N. B. Hannah is recorded as Hannah Beard in the Bishop's transcript of St. John the Baptist, Huntley, Gloucestershire, England register but the original register clearly says Read.

John passed away in 1798 and was buried on the 13th June 1798 at St. John the Baptist, Huntley, Gloucestershire, England.^[3]

Children born to John & Sarah Billingham: Mary Billingham (bapt. 1741 at Taynton), Sarah Billingham (bapt. 1743 at Taynton), Elizabeth Billingham (bapt. 1746 at Taynton), William Billingham (bapt. 1748 at Taynton), Edward Billingham (bapt. 1750 at Taynton, bur. 1754 at Taynton), Martha Billingham (bapt. 1754 at Taynton) and Daniel Billingham (bapt. 1756 at Taynton). Son John jnr. was likely the fist son born and may have been born prior to the marriage of his parents.

In 1782 a John Billingham was a tenant at Pool Farm, Huntley, Gloucestershire. If this was the same John Billingham, it would suggest he was born earlier than 1772, especially as he was occupied as a yeoman in 1773 when his father died intestate. A birth year of around 1750 is more likely.

John Billingham is only recorded in the Land Tax Records for Huntley, Gloucestershire England until 1798 (when his representatives are recorded as tenants of E. Probyn Esq.).

Descendants of John Billingham, through both sons John and Thomas, are maternal autosomal DNA matches to Michelle Wilkes
