Biography

William Clifford was born on the 11th January 1898^[1] at Saffron Walden, Essex, England^[2][3]. He was the son of William Benstead and [[Thurgood-219|Ada Benstead]^[2][3].

On Monday 25th April 1927, William Clifford married Lily Elizabeth Mitchell at St. Luke, Whaley Thorns, Derbyshire, England^[4][5].

On Monday (25th April 1927) at St. Luke's Church, Whaley Thorns, by the Rev. C. W. Whiteacre, the marriage was solemnised of Miss Lily Elizabeth Mitchell, 247, North Street, Langwith, daughter of Mrs. Mitchell and of the late Mr. T. Mitchell, Langwith, and Mr. William Clifford Benstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benstead, 59, Market St., Shirebrook. The bride, who was given away by her uncle Mr. D. Robinson, wore a dress of ivory crepe falconne, and a veil and wreath of orange blossom, lent by Mrs. Stanley Driver, and carried a shower bouquet of pink carnations. The bridesmaid, Miss Phyllis Mitchell, sister of the bride, wore a dress of pale rose calanese with picture hat to match, and carried a bouquet of cream roses. Her string of pearls was a gift of the bridegroom. Mr. S. Hodgson, Shirebrook, was best man. After the ceremony the bouquets were placed on the grave of the bride's father. The honeymoon is being spent at Weston-super-Mare, the bride going away in a two-piece suit of bois-de-rose with hat to match."^[4]
