Charles was born in 1915. He was the son of Charles Beckingsale and Hellen Robertson. [1]
Charles was a labourer and lived in Rosewill, Timaru. He was posted to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in July 1940 to serve in WWII. The newspaper reported on July 11 that he was required to parade at the Timaru Drill Hall at 3.30 p.m. the next Tuesday. [2] A Social and Dance was held in Rosewill on 15 July to farewell him to the Army, published here.
He served in the Army as a Private in the 30 Infantry Battalion of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He was then a Private in the New Zealand Infantry Brigade, the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
Charles served in the Western Desert Campaign in North Africa. Details of his army service can be found here.
He was killed in action in the Western Desert Campaign in 1942. He is buried at El Alamein War Cemetery, Maṭrūḥ, Egypt. Details of his gravestone are here and his gravestone can be viewed here. [3]
