Sir William Gervase Beckett, 1st Bt. was born on 14 January 1866. He was the son of William Beckett-Denison and Hon. Helen Duncombe. He married, firstly, Hon. Mabel Theresa Duncombe, daughter of William Reginald Duncombe, Viscount Helmsley and Lady Muriel Frances Louisa Chetwynd-Talbot, on 12 February 1896.[1] He married, secondly, Lady Marjorie Blanche Eva Greville, daughter of Francis Richard Charles Guy Greville, 5th Earl of Warwick and Frances Evelyn Maynard, on 1 November 1917. He died on 24 August 1937 at age 71.[2]
Sir William Gervase Beckett, 1st Bt. usually went by his middle name of Gervase. He was principal proprietor and editor-in-chief of Saturday Review. He was a director of Westminster Bank. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Yorkshire Hussars. On 17 July 1905 he was granted the rank of a baron's son. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Whitby between 1906 and 1918. He was Assistant Military Secretary of the Northen Command between 1914 and 1916. He was Assistant Director of the War and Trade Department between 1918 and 1919. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Scarborough and Whitby between 1918 and 1922. He was created 1st Baronet Beckett, of Kirkdale, co. York [U.K.] on 28 June 1921. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Leeds North between 1923 and 1929.
