From Biography for Sarah Ann Clark:
"Sarah Ann Clark was born in Lincolnshire and arrived in New Zealand in 1876. She was the great grandmother of Marion Clark for whom this book was written. ("The Clark family of Inglewood").
Sarah was the oldest daughter (2nd child) a very hard working girl and later woman. At the age of 20 (1888) Sarah married Samuel Thomas Beattie son of Edward Beattie and Anastasia Keyne. Samuel was born 23 Feb 1867 in New Plymouth baptised in the Catholic Church, New Plymouth and educated at the Catholic School along with his brother Henry.
Sarah and Samuel produced 3 children in New Plymouth, Henry, Olive and Charles. To feed this family Samuel was working as a Saddler but there appeared to be more work in Hawkes Bay, so Sarah and Samuel took cattle on the railway from New Plymouth to Waipukurau, then drove them on the track to Porangahau where they lived until the 1930s.
While Samuel continued with his Saddlery trade, Sarah produced many children - another 12. Of those 15 children 14 survived to adulthood, the last child being stillborn in 1902. Henry Edward (Dick), Olive Gladys (May), Charles Lewis (Darby), Rebecca Mary (Peggy), Felix (Ned), Norah Ellen (Kate), Sarah Ann (Jean), Samuel Thomas (Bob), Albert Victor (Sandy), Gerald Arthur (Mate), Kathleen Helen (Queenie), John Cassels (Jack), Marion Ruth (Maisie), Adeline Elsie (Addie), Charles Leslie (Darby) Beattie was killed in WW1 on 7 August 1917 and his memorial is on the wall of the Porangahau Anglican Church.
Meanwhile Sarah took charge of expectant Mothers in Porangahau assisting at their delivery. You ask how could she do this when she had such a brood of her own. It appears that any children that were not of school age and were at home, she would tie them to the leg of the table, or anywhere else safe, go and do the delivery and then return to find her children still where she left them!
The local school was where all the Beattie children were educated. Samuel Thomas Beattie also ended his days in Porirua Mental Hospital. From stories told it appears that he was an alcoholic.
Sarah lived until she was 87 years of age and was buried in Porangahau cemetery 19 April 1955 with 12 of her surviving children present at her funeral."
