William was born in 1807. He was the son of David Beatson and Harriet Whalesby. It is likely he attended King's College, London before pursuing an career as an architect under John Wallen.
In 1830, William married John's daughter, Maria.
In 1851, he and the family emigrated to New Zealand on the Midlothian settling at Stoke, then in Nelson. Beatson was responsible for a number of Nelson buildings including the Wesleyan Church, St. Barnabas's at Stoke and Nelson College.[1]
He lived at Guthrie Grange, Stoke and then Selwyn Place, Nelson.[2]
He died on 13 January 1870 at Nelson, New Zealand.[3][4] and is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson.[5]
He bequeathed his estate to his wife Maria and made her the sole executix of his will.[6]
