John W. Bean is the son of James Bean and Mary Ann (Bledsoe) Bean.
In 1843, in Georgia, John married Elizabeth Williams, daughter of George Williams of Russell County, Georgia. John and Elizabeth took up residence in Pike County, Alabama and Elizabeth's father moved there with them. The part of Pike County, in which they lived, became Bullock County in 1866.
Three of their sons became doctors: Dr. James M. Bean practiced at Buck Horn, Alabama; Dr. John Bean practiced at Trenton, Arkansas; and Dr. Whitefield Bean, who started his medical studies under his brother James.
