Biography

Ellen Louise Baxter was the daughter of Matthew Baxter and his 2nd wife, widow, Anne Maria Joyce Birtles.

She attended Kakanui and Weston schools with her sister Catherine. Admission date to Weston, 6 February 1905. 1

In 1918, Ellen retired as a probationer from Weston School after 2 years service due to ill health.

Ellen later attended Teachers College and qualified as a School Teacher. In 1921, Ellen passed her degree, 3rd Class at the University of Otago.

In 1922 she was appointed to Waikouaiti school. She taught in North Otago - Enfield and Karitane and Nelson at Nelson Girls College. Ellen never married and retired from teaching in the mid 1970's.

She passed away age 90 at the Iona Home and Hospital in Oamaru and is buried at Oamaru Old and New Cemetery. BLK 195, PLOT 57, 58.
