Retired VMI professor dies after truck hits his bicycle Col Baur was a professor emeritus who still taught a biology class at the institute. A 64 year old retired Virginia Military Institute professor was killed Thursday after a truck struck him while he was riding his bicycle in Rockbridge County, Virginia according to Virginia State Police.
Emergency crews were called at 9:56 am to US 11 (Lee Highway) near Wind Lane north of Lexington. A news release said a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling north on US 11 when it struck a bicycle that was also north bound. Thomas Baur, who lived in Lexington, was taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital where he later died. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured, the release said. The crash is still under investigation and no charges have been placed. Baur was a professor emeritus of biology at VMI where he still taught a class, according to school spokesman Stewart Maclnnis.
He was a native of Huntington West Virginia and had served on active duty in the Army Reserve for eight years. He joined the VMI biology department in 1988 and received several accolades. Baur retired from full time teaching in 2013 but continued to serve the institute and was involved in numerous community activities according to a news release from VMI.
