Biography

Jake Baty is a part of US Black heritage.

Jake was born about 1815. In 1880, Jake was living with his wife, Jane, in the 6th Ward in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He was a farmer. Also living in the same household were his grandchildren, Abondert Morten, Shawline Broom (age 10), Miry Broom (8), Mary Broom (6) and Nancy Broom (3). A household headed by Jake Baty, Jr. is listed next after Jake Baty on this census page.<1>

Research Note: A man named Prince Broom, who was a widower, is also listed in the 6th Ward of Caddo Parish, Louisiana. His children are listed as Shawlena (age 9), Elvena (7), Mary (5), and Nancy (4). Jake Baty heads family #377; Prince Broom heads family #339. This appears to be the same four children, with Prince as their father. This could happen if the children were at their father's house the day he was enumerated and at their grandfather's house the day he was enumerated. Prince was enumerated 11 June 1880. Unfortunately there is no date for the page Jake Baty is on; However, the page before the one Jake is listed on, is dated 12 June 1880.
